Youngstown council considers hiring outside firm to redraw wards

Posted: Updated:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Youngstown city council is considering the use of an outside company to redraw the city's seven wards.

The goal of redistricting is to divide the wards equally based on population.

Youngstown State University presented options to council. But Wednesday night a majority of council voted to hear other proposals, should they come forward.

"This is not a knock on YSU study. It's just a fact we want to make sure we're doing everything we can to make sure it's a good process." said seventh ward councilman Walter Swierz.

The new wards would likely not go into effect until the end of council member terms in 2016,
