Warren firefighters share fire prevention tips with students

Posted: Updated:

WARREN, Ohio - Warren firefighters are busy sharing safety lessons with students for National Fire Prevention week.

Families joined the Warren fire department's education day Sunday, where hands-on learning meant they'd take home more than just answers to their burning questions.

Children lined up to learn how to use a fire extinguisher and fire hose. Students were taught what they should do when faced with a fire emergency at home inside a fire safety trailer.

This year, prevention week is focusing on kitchen fires and the Warren department has plenty of experience battling those blazes.

"We constantly have kitchen fires and bedroom fires," Lt. Paul Lamosek says. "The bedroom fires go back to they either involve people falling asleep smoking, or their children are playing with lighters."

The department urges all families to plan and practice fire emergency exit plans at home this time of year. Lt. Lamosek says homeowners should test smoke alarms monthly and change the batteries twice a year, usually when you set your clocks for Daylight Savings Time.
