Hundreds in Canfield take steps to stop diabetes

Posted: Updated:

CANFIELD, Ohio - Hundreds gathered on the Canfield fairgrounds this morning to take steps to stop diabetes in the U.S.

The Walk to Stop Diabetes is a signature fundraising walk of the American Diabetes Association and the annual Canfield event is one of more than 100 of its kind across the country.

Many create local teams and wear shirts with the names of family members who suffer from the disease.

One Canfield woman says she started her team six years ago, because she has relatives that suffer from the disease.

"You never know, diabetes is one of those things that can happen just out of the blue, so you never know," says Julie Swauger of Canfield.

Swauger says raising awareness and joining the morning walk is two-fold.

"I love doing this, because first of all it's good exercise to help keep from getting diabetes, but it's a lot of fun."

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports almost 26 million children and adults in the U.S. suffer from diabetes.
