Auction of Youngstown's McGuffey Mall underway

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Youngstown's McGuffey Mall and Garland Plaza is on the auction block.

Bidding starts at $100,000 in the three day, online auction that runs through noon Wednesday.

The two Youngstown retail buildings were built in 1954 and are located at 761 and 795 North Garland Avenue. The buildings sit on 22 acres and have a combined 238,194 square footage and 229,181 rental area.

Owned by the Cafaro Company, McGuffey Mall was at the heart of a legal dispute between them and Mahoning County Commissioners. One of the buildings on the property was home to the county's Job and Family Services until 2006, when commissioners announced they would purchase Oakhill Renaissance Place and move the department there. That purchase led to a lengthy court battle between the Cafaro Company and the county.

A spokesperson for the company says the mall is no longer considered a core property in the company's portfolio of real estate.
