Missing Pa. man with dementia, ex-Steeler, found

Posted: Updated:

BOYERS, Pa. (AP) - An 84-year-old western Pennsylvania man who reportedly suffers from dementia and once played for the Pittsburgh Steelers is expected to be OK after he spent about 20 hours in the woods after not returning from a walk.

Raymond Mathews is from Harrisville in northern Butler County, about 50 miles north of Pittsburgh. He was seen walking in nearby Marion Township about 2:20 p.m. Tuesday. Searchers couldn't immediately find him and resumed looking Wednesday morning, when Mathews was found in about 15 minutes.

His wife Ruth says she's "elated" and that her husband was "very lucky." He was taken to a nearby hospital as a precaution.

Mathews was a running back and receiver for the Steelers for nine seasons from 1951 to 1959 after playing at Clemson University.
