YSU students help raise awareness of homelessness in the Valley

Posted: Updated:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The Youngstown State University Scholars and Honors Program held their 12th annual homelessness awareness event called Shantytown.

Shantytown is an annual tradition that raises hundreds of dollars for local organizations.

Following volunteering on Saturday, the students constructed a cardboard community of shanties and slept outside their residence hall.

"Every organization that we went to really loved everything that we did. We went to different ones like YNDC, Grow Youngstown, Second Harvest Food Bank, and those kinds of things. The Rescue Mission was also involved too. We did a bunch of things that helped raised homelessness awareness," said Jordan Edgell, Planning Committee for Shantytown.

The students also held a canned food drive.
