Gov. Kasich makes offer to help Youngstown City Schools

Posted: Updated:

NEW SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – While Governor Kasich was in the Valley on Monday to attend the dedication of a gas processing plant, he made a strong offer to help fix the Youngstown City Schools.

Governor Kasich said it's about putting children first and lifting up the community and his office is ready to help, if someone submits a workable plan.

"I've talked to the politicians down in Columbus and I've talked to some business leaders up here. And I want you to know, just like what we did in Cleveland with the mayor and the school board and the union and the business leaders, we'll do the same thing here," Governor Kasich said.

"I went and chased him down in the parking lot. I said governor, whenever you're talking about fixing the city schools; I'm on the education committee. I go to these schools every single day. I will help you do whatever you're speaking about. But he was very, very vague. And just to come in here, get on the microphone and say we're going to fix Youngstown schools, and then get in a car and head back to Columbus, I don't know what that means?" said State Senator Joe Schiavoni.

The governor has agreed to sit down with Senator Schiavoni to discuss the Youngstown Schools.

Superintendent Connie Hathorne tells 21 News that no one from the governor's office has contacted him.
