Harding on heightened security following Facebook rumor

Posted: Updated:
WARREN, Ohio - Students at Warren G. Harding High School are greeted before class by multiple officers for a second day.

A post spreading across Facebook referencing shots fired inside a Warren school was determined nothing more than a rumor.

The message was enough to prompt the district to ask six to 10 school resource officers to check bookbags Monday and remain in place before the starting bell rang Tuesday morning.

Police say the confusion began Monday at around 12 p.m., after reports of gunfire at a home on Jackson Street in the city. It was an incident unrelated to the classroom, but still a distraction.

"It makes it harder on our students that those are the factors that play into their education," Steve Chiaro says, associate superintendent.

Chiaro says the district has been fortunate that recent crime in the city has not had ties to the school system.

"It has been more indicative of what's going on within the community at this point in time," he says.

Right now, the district is leaning on teachers and staff to keep the focus on learning, while students inherit life lessons not found in a textbook.

"It builds in a resilience, our kids are strong," Chiaro says.
