106-year-old Pittsburgh-area church closes doors

Posted: Updated:

DORMONT, Pa. (AP) - A 106-year-old church has closed in the Pittsburgh suburbs, a victim of dwindling membership in recent years.

Dormont Presbyterian Church opened in 1907 and had nearly 1,000 members in the 1950s, but its numbers have dwindled to just over 100 parishioners.

Those folks will now attend services at another suburban church, Wallace Memorial Presbyterian Church in Green Tree.

The church building has been sold to North Way Christian Community in Wexford, a booming suburb north of the city. Northway plans to renovate the building, which should be finished by the spring.

The tiny Presbyterian congregation could no longer afford to maintain the building, and held its last service there at 11 a.m. Sunday.

The Rev. Sarah Robbins says it was important to find another church willing to take care of the building.
