Company denies firing Muslim workers for prayers

Posted: Updated:

CINCINNATI (AP) - DHL Global Mail says allegations the company fired 24 Muslim employees over prayer breaks are unfounded.

The company's Friday statement comes a day after the Cincinnati chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations said the northern Kentucky employees were fired last month after using their break times for regular evening prayer.

The council says an apparent change by managers on the flexible break policy led to the conflict.

DHL Global Mail denies any wrongdoing and says it will fully defend itself in any future action.

The company says it accommodates reasonable religious practices and provides equal opportunities to all employees.

CAIR says it has filed complaints over the matter with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, which can offer to mediate or investigate whether to file suit against DHL Global Mail.
