Part of historic OH building mistakenly demolished

Posted: Updated:

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) - The city of Dayton is trying to sort out a situation that saw part of an historic downtown building mistakenly demolished.

Officials say it could take weeks to resolve the dispute between the city and a demolition contractor over the damage done this week to a building formerly occupied by The Dayton Daily News.

The newspaper reports that demolition was halted after a crew tore down part of the building's 1922 facade. A city Landmarks Commission had required that the historic facades of the buildings be retained.

The contractor said he was working from engineering drawings indicating that the entire 1922 facade was to be demolished.

An $18 million to $20 million 200-unit student housing project is to be constructed on the site, with the historic facades preserved.
