Ohio woman imprisoned for not telling men of HIV

Posted: Updated:

AKRON, Ohio (AP) - A judge in northeastern Ohio has sentenced a 20-year-old woman to four years in prison for having unprotected sex with two men without telling them she was HIV positive.

The Akron Beacon Journal reports that Sarah Barfett was sentenced Thursday after pleading guilty to felonious assault in Summit County Common Pleas Court.

Judge Alison McCarty said prison was appropriate for Barfett because she put the men's lives at risk by not telling them she has the virus that causes AIDS.

The judge told Barfett that "I need you to understand what a menace you are."

Authorities said Barfett met one of the men at a party and the other on Facebook.

Her attorney information wasn't available Friday.
