New YSU enrollment chief optimistic

Posted: Updated:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Faced with declining enrollment and cuts to state funding, YSU has appointed a new Associate Vice President for Enrollment Planning and Management.

Gary Swegan stopped by WFMJ Weekend Today to talk about his first week on the job and changes that have been made to the school's admissions policy.

"Clearly as we move from open admission to open access, there is a short term impact, no question about it, but President Dunn did the right thing. He really had no choice, because the way the state of Ohio is funding higher education going forward, there is no longer an incentive, if you will, to give open opportunity to everyone. We want to be as liberal as we can, certainly, at Youngstown State because this is a tremendous service and really service to the entire Valley," Swegan said.

Swegan said he's been pleased with what he's seen at YSU so far and will continue to gather information to find ways to boost declining enrollment numbers.
