Contract deadline looming for Anthem and Akron Children's Hospital

Posted: Updated:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - A year-end deadline is looming over contract talks between Akron Children's Hospital and Anthem Blue Cross & Blue Shield.

In a statement to families with Anthem insurance coverage, the hospital says that "Beginning January 1st, Akron Children's and it's physicians may be considered "out of the network" with Anthem.

After months of negotiations the two sides have been unable to reach agreement to new contract terms.

A spokesperson for Anthem said, "Primarily the focus is on reimbursement rates and terms that we believe are fair and competitive, that are in line with contracts we have with other children's medical centers in Ohio, as well as in the best interests of our customers."

Both sides say they are committed to continuing discussions with the hope that an agreement can be reached in time to avert a disruption of the network.
