Humane Society rescues malnourished dog from abandoned home

Posted: Updated:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - A dog found living in deplorable conditions in Youngstown is rescued by the Animal Charity Humane Society.

Sweetie was found inside an abandoned home on Elliot Lane on the city's south side. The organization received a call from the landlord, notifying them that the dog was abandoned in the home. When agents arrived, Sweetie was found lying on a bedroom mattress.

The organization is now working to get her healthy.

"She's been tested for heartworm, which I believe is negative, so that's good and as you can see, the condition that she's in, that she was possibly left there six weeks by herself," Christopher Flak says, Humane Society agent.

Flak says they're investigating and have four suspects they're pursuing.

He wants Sweetie's story to remind pet owners that not properly caring for their animals can lead to criminal charges.

"We want to get the word out that we are going to prosecute these," Flak says. "These are our friends, they're our companions."

Flak says they're still asking for the public's help to gather more information. Anyone with tips may call the organization's tip line at 330-788-1064, ext. 17.
