New bills take on painkiller addiction in Ohio

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Ohio lawmakers have announced a new package of bills they hope will take a bite out of the prescription painkiller problem.

The legislators called a news conference Tuesday to talk about the bills, which were developed after a series of regional meetings about the pain-pill epidemic in Ohio.

The bills are designed to decrease the amount of painkillers being prescribed in the medical system, keep addicts alive while preventing them from diverting more pills out of the medical system, and getting them effective treatment so they can recover.

The package includes 11 different bipartisan House bills.

Accidental overdoses from prescription painkillers have skyrocketed in the state in recent years.
