Ohio farm worker drowns in manure pit

Posted: Updated:

ASHTABULA, Ohio (AP) - Authorities in northeastern Ohio believe a farm worker who died over the weekend drowned in a manure storage lagoon after his tractor turned over.

The Ashtabula County Sheriff's Office says 41-year-old Santos Medina de Jesus drowned in the lagoon on a dairy farm Saturday after he was pinned by his overturned tractor.

The (Ashtabula) Star-Beacon reports that deputies who were called to the farm in Dorset Township found the tractor in the half-acre lagoon, which is about 4 feet deep. A firefighter who entered the lagoon, tethered by a rope, located de Jesus' submerged body.

An autopsy is planned.

A report said de Jesus was in charge of removing manure from a barn and pushing it into the lagoon.
