Community asked to get involved to protect jobs at Youngstown private prison

Posted: Updated:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - A massive effort is underway to protect jobs at the privately operated prison in Youngstown.

There is some concern that the Northeast Ohio Correctional Center could lose its contract with a prison in Pennsylvania when their renewal comes up in the next few months.

On Wednesday, executives from Corrections Corporation of America spoke with local businesses and elected leaders about the importance of the facility to the local economy.

They're hoping the launch of a new website will help keep the center open.

"There are more than 400 jobs at stake. That's about $20 million dollars in payroll annually. The facility pays close to $2 million in property taxes of which about $1.3 million go to local schools; so a lot at stake for the community, a lot at stake for CCA," said Steve Owen, Senior Director, Corrections Corporation of America.

"As I emphasize over and over again as a community, we have to do these things together to make sure there is a future. It's about investing in our future in the valley and this is one of those investments," said Representative Bob Hagan.

You can find out more about what you can do to help preserve jobs at CCA by clicking here and then clicking the get involved tab.
