Baltimore firefighters to celebrate Olympic luger

Posted: Updated:

BALTIMORE (AP) - A U.S. Olympic athlete is getting a send-off from her family of Baltimore firefighters.

Summer Britcher of Glen Rock, Pa., will compete in singles luge at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, in February. The 19-year-old Britcher is the daughter of Captain William Britcher of the Baltimore Fire Department. Her brother, William, is a firefighter-paramedic, her grandfather is a retired captain, and she has two uncles who are lieutenants.

The department will celebrate her departure for Russia on Thursday at Engine 29 in northwest Baltimore. Kimmie Meissner, a former Olympic figure skater and a Maryland native, is also scheduled to attend.
