Campbell fire crews taking extra precautions during deep freeze

Posted: Updated:

CAMPBELL, Ohio - Fire crews in Campbell took extra precautions when responding to a fire due to the below freezing temperatures.

Crews were called to a kitchen fire on Eastern Avenue at about 4:00 p.m. Monday afternoon.

Not knowing if the cold temperatures had caused problems with the hydrants, crews requested backup from additional departments.

"Hydrants, you are supposed to drain them when you shut them down. Unfortunately, the older hydrants they don't drain properly. If they freeze up on you, you don't have water. We carry 750 gallons on our truck and we carry another 400 on our ladder, but if it's a lager fire that not going to last very long," said Nick Hrelec, Campbell Fire Chief.

Officials say the fire at the home started on the stove. Everyone got out safely.
