Mathews high school basketball legend to be honored

Posted: Updated:

VIENNA TWP., Ohio - One of the most prolific high school basketball players to come out of Vienna High School, now known as Mathews, in the 1950s was Rex Leach.

On Friday, the school will honor Leach by renaming the basketball floor at the high school.

Rex Leach Court will be unveiled in between the junior varsity and varsity games.

Leach set numerous school records, the most notable scoring 1,266 points in a season, including 72 in a game. He averaged 44 points a game in the 1954-55 season.

Leach's scoring average is still a state record for the most in a season and his more than 2,500 points in a career is fifth statewide. That season Leach led his club to a perfect season with 22 wins.
