YSU men ready to take on Oakland for the first time in the Horizon League

Posted: Updated:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The Youngstown State men's basketball team plays Oakland later this week for the first time as a Horizon League member.

They played last year in the first round of the CIT Tournament.

The Grizzlies are 8-14 overall after losing nine of their first 11 games. But four of those losses came to nationally ranked teams like North Carolina, UCLA, Gonzaga and Michigan State who beat the Grizzlies by only four points.

"I don't think that there is anybody in our league that would have played their schedule that would have had more than one or two wins. That was a murderous row so to speak. I don't think you'll see that from them anymore, but that was a tough stretch. The hardest stretch of anybody, I think, in college basketball. That was brutal," said YSU men's coach Jerry Slocum.
