Race coming to Youngstown will honor fallen officers

Posted: Updated:

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio - An effort to honor fallen police officers is gaining speed.

Organizers of the 'Officers Down 5-K Foundation' were selling shirts and giving away event tickets at Jack Perry's Grill and Pub on Monday.

The foundation has already held races in Cleveland and Pittsburgh. They now plan to come to the Youngstown area sometime in June.

By selling t-shirts, they hope to off-set the cost of organizing the races. Proceeds from the actual events will then go to the Officer Down Memorial Page, The Wounded Officers Project and local police memorials.

"Years ago there was a strong support, community support, and it kind of went away. So basically I'm kind of just trying to bring everybody back together and show support on just a day," said Founder T.J. Burke. "A lot of people want to show support when an officer is killed. We're doing it on just a day, bringing everyone together showing that community support."
