Pa Attorney General holds hearing on Sharon Regional Health sale

Posted: Updated:

SHARON, Pa. - People packed into Sharon City Council chambers Thursday afternoon hoping to learn more about the pending sale of Sharon Regional Health System.

A representative of the Pennsylvania Attorney General's office hosted a public hearing seeking comment about a definitive agreement with a unit of Community Health Systems Inc. (CHS) of Nashville, Tenn. to purchase Sharon Regional.

Half a dozen people asked questions, which will be presented to the State Attorney General, whose approval is needed, along with other regulatory approvals before the deal can be finalized.

CHS owns, leases or operates 206 hospitals in 29 states, including Northside Hospital in Youngstown, as well as Trumbull Memorial Hospital and Hillcrest Rehabilitation Hospital.

Sharon would be the first hospital that CHS operates in Pennsylvania.

Among those making comments at Thursday's hearing was a construction worker, who said he thought that the acquisition would be good for the economy.

CHS will invest $75-million into the Sharon hospital over the next five years.

The PA Attorney General is expected to provide final approve of the acquisition within the next two months.
