FOLSOM, Calif., Feb. 6, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Folsom Care Center, a premier family owned skilled nursing facility, installs Pacific West Pharmacy's P.A.C. (Pacwest Automated Cabinet) to increase efficiency and reduce medication waste.

The state-of-the-art onsite dispensing system enables secure, automated medication dispensing at the facility to deliver pharmacist-approved, on-demand medications 24/7/365.  It can quickly dispense pharmacist-approved medications right before each medication pass and on-demand to facilitate new residents, STAT orders, first doses, and PRNs.  P.A.C. virtually eliminates medication waste and gives nurses immediate access to patient's new medications.

"This will revolutionize the way we administer medications to our residents, ensuring an even higher quality of care," said Calvin Callaway, Administrator & Owner at Folsom Care Center.

"Folsom Care Center is dedicated to their residents' care," said Corey Whitney, Vice President at Pacific West Pharmacy.  "The Pacwest Automated Cabinet will provide access to medication 24/7/365, right at the facility while reducing medication errors and waste."

Under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) requires 14-day or less medication dispensing at long term care facilities.  The intent of "Short Cycle Dispensing" policy is to reduce unused medications by moving from the traditional 30 day fills.  The Mandate took effect in January 2013.

Folsom Care Center will significantly reduce medication waste by only dispensing the patients' medications needed for that day.  The onsite dispensing system has also shown to improve patient care by increasing medication availability and allowing nurses to spend less time managing medications and more time with their patients.
