Celebrating Polish heritage through food

Posted: Updated:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – It was cold outside on Sunday, but many people were warming up to their Polish heritage by preparing some ethnic dishes.

A Polish cooking class is held on the second Sunday of each month and this week they were learning how to make nalesniki, otherwise known as Polish crepes.

In the kitchen of First Presbytarian Church in Youngstown dessert style crepes were made with fruit as well as heartier versions with ham and cheese.

"People have done some things that they didn't know they were capable of doing and they've done some fine jobs. And they're always great people because they help you clean up," said cooking instructor Tad Siembida.

Next month's Polish dish will be stuffed cabbage.

The classes run from noon until 4:00 p.m. and cost $25.
