Ohio House committee OKs 2 election-related bills

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - A Republican-dominated legislative committee in Ohio has approved two bills that would affect early voting in the presidential battleground state.

One bill would eliminate the chance for residents to register to vote and cast an early ballot on the same day. Without that so-called golden week, early voting would start the first day after voter registration ends. That's typically 29 days before Election Day.

The early-voting period currently begins 35 days before Election Day.

Another bill would set rules for mailing unsolicited absentee ballot applications. Ohioans can cast an absentee ballot by mail or in person without giving any reason.

An Ohio House panel passed both measures along party lines on Tuesday. The full House is likely to consider them next week. The Senate passed earlier versions of the bills.
