MECCA TOWNSHIP, Ohio - Authorities in Trumbull County are investigating a fire that claimed one life.

Investigators tell 21 News that the body of a woman, believed to be in her 70's or 80's was found inside her burning home at 7199 Phillips Rice Road.

A relative identifies the victim as Marjorie Fitch. Her ex-son-in-law says ran across the street from his home to help her, but he says he was too late.

"It happened quick, real quick," Elmer Smith says, Fitch's ex-son-in-law. "I didn't even get from there to there the flames were coming out of the window already."

Firefighters from Cortland and Mecca Township were called to the home at 12:45 p.m. When they arrived, the house was engulfed in flames. They were forced to shutdown the a portion of the roadway near the house for close to three hours.

Investigators say that the home was heated using a wood burning stove, but the cause of the fire is not yet determined.
