Gas well fire in SW Pa. out; 1 missing, 1 injured

Posted: Updated:

DILLINER, Pa. (AP) - Company officials say a fire at a natural gas well in southwestern Pennsylvania that injured one worker and left another unaccounted for has gone out.

Chevron said the blaze at the well and an adjacent well in Dunkard Township about 50 miles south of Pittsburgh was no longer burning as of about 3 p.m. Saturday.

Company spokesman Kent Robertson said it's premature to speculate what cause the flames to go out, but "there is not enough fuel being emitted to sustain combustion, and with the cooling of the crane, the ignition source has been removed."

He said the crane will be removed and water tanks installed at the site will be used to cool the well site and equipment so work to cap the wells can be done safely.
