Lamp is suspected in NE Ohio animal sanctuary fire

Posted: Updated:

RAVENNA, Ohio (AP) - Fire officials say a heat lamp or bulb used to warm a barn is the suspected cause of a fire at a northeast Ohio animal sanctuary that killed two goats, a rooster and a pot belly pig.

The fire broke out Friday night at the Happy Trails Farm Animal Sanctuary in Portage County.

Edinburg Fire Chief Tim Paulus tells the Akron Beacon Journal  officials can't determine what happened for certain but suspect that a heat lamp ignited straw bedding.

The farm's executive director, Annette Fisher, says 30 to 40 bales of feed hay stored in a loft helped fuel the blaze.

Two goats used in an outreach program survived the fire, as did two cats.

The sanctuary rescues, rehabilitates and provides an adoption program for abused or abandoned animals.
