Poll shows improvement for Democratic hopeful for Ohio governor

Posted: Updated:

CLEVELAND (AP) - Democratic gubernatorial candidate Ed FitzGerald says his county was able to keep a significant budget reserve while cutting expenses and building a new administration building for Cuyahoga County.

FitzGerald, the county's executive, made the comments during his State of the County on Wednesday before an audience of about 800 at the Cleveland City Club.

FitzGerald touted a new county law that requires 25 percent of general fund operating revenue to be held in reserve. He called that "a very high bar in government financial standards." He said the new administration building is the first constructed in 50 years.

His remarks came as a new Quinnipiac University poll showed Republican Gov. John Kasich (KAY'-sik) leading FitzGerald 43 percent to 38 percent. FitzGerald has gained slightly.
