YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - You could say that encouragement with a "kick" was the theme for students in Kirkmere Middle School's Discovery Program.

Former NFL place kickers Paul McFadden and Jeff Wilkins spoke to seventh and eighth grade students at a special assembly on Friday.

The athletes delivered a message about education, decision-making and overcoming adversity.

"You can learn that you don't have to do what other kids want you to do necessarily." said Wilkins. "You can make up your mind and surround yourself with the right people, whether its your friends, your parents, teachers, anything like that to help you as a support group."

Both McFadden and Wilkins were standout kickers at YSU before having successful careers in the NFL
