Evacuations reported from flooding in NE Ohio

Posted: Updated:

VERMILION, Ohio (AP) - Flooding from ice jams have led to evacuations along the Vermilion River and at least one rescue of a resident in northeast Ohio.

WEWS-TV and WJW-TV in Cleveland report that a homeowner and dog were rescued late Saturday morning by boat after being trapped in their home by flood waters and ice in the city of Vermilion, about 30 miles west of Cleveland.

A police dispatcher said Riverside Drive residents were advised to evacuate, but he knew of no mandatory evacuations. He referred calls for additional information to the fire department, which did not immediately return messages Saturday.

The National Weather Service confirmed there were some evacuations, with the most severe flooding around the mouth of the Vermilion River.

Flood warnings remain in effect for several rivers across northern Ohio.
