MEDINA, Ohio- Ohio lawmakers on both sides of the aisle rose to their feet during Governor John Kasich's State of the State speech Monday to recognize the strength of three Cleveland women.
Governor Kasich gave Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight this year's Ohio Courage Medals.
The three women were abducted and imprisoned by Ariel Castro in a Cleveland house for about a decade.
They broke free last May.
"No one rescued them. They rescued themselves first by staying strong and by sticking together and then by literally breaking out into freedom," said Kasich.
Kasich said despite having the worst of the world thrown at them, these extraordinary women rose above it.
