Howland schools delay district reorganizing plan

Posted: Updated:

HOWLAND TWP., Ohio - Howland Local Schools is postponing plans to re-organize its elementary schools.

The board of education and the district's superintendent decided this week to do more research before rearranging students into buildings by grade level.

The decision follows several meetings where parents, teachers and the community were invited to provide the district with feedback on such a endeavor.

"We had a lot of input from parents and community members and we want to make sure that we have enough space for the children in the buildings that would remain open," John Sheets says, Howland superintendent.

The proposed plan would have reduced the number of elementary schools from four to three.
The district's superintendent says that if this concept is implemented, the district wants to get it right.
Sheets says some buildings would need upgrades to accommodate students with special needs and technology-related classes.

Sheets says the school board will likely propose reorganizing the district at the end of next school year.
