Second Harvest Food Bank kicks off Harvest for Hunger

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Food donations tend to decrease during the summer, so Second Harvest Food Bank tries to stock up this time of year.

The food bank held its annual kick off for its Harvest for Hunger campaign at their Salt Springs Road location on Wednesday.

Last year, the campaign raised more than $145,000 and collected nearly 40,000 pounds of food and each year the demand grows.

"Last year, the food bank distributed more food than they ever have; a record 9.2 million pounds. Every year it keeps increasing because more people show up needing food due to job loss, illness and so on. So it's our goal this year to increase that and find more food for the people who need it," said Mike Iberis, executive director of Second Harvest Food Bank Mahoning Valley.

All funds raised and food collected locally remains in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties. The food bank distributes food to 153 hunger relief organizations in those counties.
