Officials urge caution on new painkiller

Posted: Updated:

WARREN, Ohio - Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine may soon join 28 other attorneys general across the nation in asking the Food and Drug Administration  to reconsider the approval of a controversial new painkiller.

Zohyrdo will be in pharmacies within the next month.

Prescription opioids account for nearly half of all unintentional drug overdose deaths in the Valley.  And tragically there are a lot of them.

Since 2000 the numbers have skyrocketed:

In Mahoning county, nine deaths in 2000 grew to 46 in 2011.
In Trumbull, the number went from 13 to 59.
In Columbiana, 2 to 18.

Now a new, highly potent painkiller is hitting the market that experts worry will lead to more overdose deaths.

Zohydro is a pill that can easily be crushed, leading addicts to snort or inject the drug, which can intensify its effects.
