YSU women lose to Detroit 75-60

Posted: Updated:

DETROIT. Michigan - The Youngstown State women's basketball team allowed Detroit to score 17 straight points in the first half and couldn't make enough shots to rally in a 75-60 loss at Calihan Hall on Saturday afternoon.

The loss drops the Penguins to 13-14 overall and 9-5 in Horizon League play with two games left in the regular season. Detroit, which won for the third time in the last four home games, is now 6-21 overall and 3-11 in conference play.

YSU's Heidi Schlegel scored all of her game-high 25 points in the second half, but she was out for the final 15 minutes of the first half with two fouls. She committed the first one on a rebound with 16:05 left, and she was whistled for an illegal screen near the 3-point line at the 14:56 mark. Latisha Walker was also called for two offensive fouls in the first three minutes, leaving the Penguins undersized for most of the first half.

Schlegel's second-half efforts allowed YSU to trim an 18-point deficit down to 10 with just over six minutes remaining, but the Penguins never found their shooting touch. YSU, which lost for the sixth straight time at Detroit, shot 28.8 percent overall and was just 4-fof-26 from 3-point range. The Guins missed their first 11 shots from beyond the arc in the second half and made just one field goal in the final eight minutes of the first half.

Detroit freshman Megan Galloway had 16 points and 15 rebounds to lead four Titans in double figures. Senee Shearer had 15 points and became the school's career leader in 3-pointers in the first 20 seconds of the game.

The Penguins had a rough first six minutes with seven turnovers and Schlegel and Walker going to the bench with two fouls, but Jenna Hirsch capped a five-point run that put them ahead 17-16 with 8:12 remaining. A Reyna Montgomery steal led to a Minisha Frederick-Childress bucket, and the Titans went on to score 17 straight points and go up 33-17. The Penguins missed nine straight field goals during that run.

YSU cut the deficit to 12 twice in the first six minutes of the second half, but it went more than four minutes without a field goal. Detroit's lead was down to 57-47 with 6:11 left after two free throws by Karen Flagg, but that's as close as the Penguins could get as they were held to three points over the next three minutes.

Youngstown State returns home to host Wright State on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m.
