Mathews school employees issue strike notice

Posted: Updated:

VIENNA TOWNSHIP, Ohio - The union representing non-teaching employees of the Mathews School Local District have filed a ten day strike notice.

Mathews school superintendent  Lew Lowery tells 21 News that the Ohio Association of Public School Employees represents thirty bus drivers, custodians and food service workers.

On February 19, the membership of OAPSE rejected what Lowery calls the board's last, best, and final offer and authorized their leadership to issue the strike notice.

According to Lowery, the notice would take effect at 12:01 a.m. Friday, March 14.

The union's collective bargaining agreement expired on June 30, 2013.

Lowery says remaining issues sought by the union include allowing employees to accumulate sick leave, a return to a pre-existing severance pay formula, increasing personal days and pay.

Lowery says representatives from both sides held mediated talks last October with no success.

No further talks are scheduled.

The board of education meets at 7 p.m. tonight, and is expected to discuss the strike notice.
