3 dead after pileups on snowy Ohio Turnpike

Posted: Updated:

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - Authorities now say three people have died in snowy crashes involving at least 50 vehicles on the Ohio Turnpike.

Pileups stretched across a 2-mile section in the eastbound lanes of the toll road Wednesday afternoon between Toledo and Cleveland.

The State Highway Patrol says a trooper responding to one accident was seriously injured when he was pinned between two vehicles.

Another series of pileups about 10 miles to the east shut down the turnpike's westbound lanes near Sandusky.

The patrol says emergency workers are having a difficult time responding because of the conditions and backups that stretched over seven miles.

Turnpike officials say traffic is slowly starting to move after more than four hours.
