OSP cracks down on I-680 speeders

Posted: Updated:

CANFIELD, Ohio - The Ohio Highway Patrol is teaming up with the Youngstown Police Department to crack down on drivers who speed on Interstate 680.

During three days last week, the Patrol and the Youngstown Police Department issued over 100 traffic tickets on 680 for speed.

From 2009-2013 I-680 was the scene of eight fatal accidents, 337 injury accidents, and 876 property damage crashes with the majority due to unsafe speed.

The patrol says it is placing an increased emphasis on traffic enforcement on the 680 corridor during peak crash days and times throughout 2014.

The patrol says the objective is to get motorists to obey the speed limit by placing officers along 680 in the City of Youngstown, Boardman, and Austintown Townships.

The effort will target all violations with an emphasis on speed, following too closely, improper lane changes, OVI, seatbelt violations, and failing to move over or slow down to a stopped emergency and public safety vehicle.

Officers will utilize aircraft to assist with ground operations.
