Firefighters in Mahoning County training to be hazmat technicians

Posted: Updated:

BOARDMAN TWP., Ohio - Firefighters throughout Mahoning County are in Boardman this week training to become hazmat technicians.

Technicians receive the highest level of training. Once the firefighters are certified, they will be able to assist county hazmat crews, as well as their own fire departments.

"We have our tankers turn over and things like that, hazmat spills. We have a hospital in our jurisdiction, which has chemicals all throughout it and also we have our Sunoco station right down the street on Southern Boulevard. So, those are all things that we could have to deal with," said William Ferrando, Boardman Township Fire Department.

The Boardman Township Fire Department received a grant to host the course. It wraps up on Friday.
