Ohio governor OKs 4 extra 'snow days' for schools

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Gov. John Kasich has signed a bill giving Ohio schools four extra calamity days.

Kasich was surrounded Wednesday by fifth-grade students from Stingel Elementary School in north-central Ohio. He received letters in support of the measure from some of the students.

Snow, ice and bone-chilling temperatures led many districts to exhaust the school year's five allowable calamity days, in which schools can close without making up the lost instructional time. The bill lets districts use the additional calamity days only after holding school on four other scheduled days off, such as holidays or during vacations.

Districts can continue to make up missed days through 30-minute increments tacked onto regularly scheduled days. They also have the option of using work-at-home "blizzard bags" and online lessons.

The law takes effect immediately.
