Buckeyes seek replacement for RB Carlos Hyde

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Now that Carlos Hyde is gone from Ohio State's backfield along with his 1,521 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns, there's a gaping hole in the lineup.

Ezekiel Elliott, the leading returning rusher at running back with 262 yards on only 30 carries, would seem to have the inside track to replacing Hyde.

But Elliott is getting some strong competition from several holdovers - including Rod Smith, Bri'onte Dunn and former walk-on Warren Ball - during spring practice.

With Dontre Wilson now working out with the wide receivers as an H-back, Buckeyes coaches are gauging the rushing candidates. Instead of one go-to guy at running back, it just might end up being a committee taking Hyde's spot.
