Valley unemployment rate improves year to year

Posted: Updated:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The Valley's unemployment rate is down more than a full percentage point compared to this time last year.

Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties all saw improvement.

In February of last year, the tri-county area averaged a 9.2% unemployment rate. This year, the area averaged about 7.9%.

"We've seen existing manufacturing expand their capacity because they are now supplying the oil and gas industry. We've also seen an uptick in logistics, a lot of truck driving to handle a lot of the oil and gas supply, the fracking, things of that nature," said Bert Cene, Mahoning and Columbiana Training Association.

Despite the uptick, the Valley's jobless rate remains higher than the state average, which also improved more than one percentage point compared to last year.
