Construction begins on new hotel in Salem

Posted: Updated:

SALEM, Ohio - Salem Mayor John Berlin sees construction of a new hotel as a promising economic sign for his community.

Ground was broken Thursday morning for a new  Holiday Inn Express along Cunningham Road on Salem's east end. Mayor Berlin expects that the 70-room hotel should be ready for occupancy by October.

The Mayor also says he is waiting to hear if the new owner of the former Timberlanes Restaurant will re-open the property as an inn.

"The new owner has purchased it and invested a great deal of money in heating ventilating air conditioning and remodeling the existing rooms. It sounds to me like he may be drawing to a conclusion here shortly." said Berlin.

After fifty years in business, financial difficulties forced Timberlanes to close in 2009.

Investors purchased the property in 2011.

Mayor Berlin pointed out that there has been a lot of interest in property near the Salem Chrysler Jeep Dodge dealership along North Ellsworth Avenue. He says he wouldn't be surprised if another hotel moves in to that area.
