Weather and gas flame linked to red glow over Poland

Posted: Updated:

POLAND TOWNSHIP, Ohio - A red glow in the sky over Poland Township Thursday night last night may be linked to the Shale Boom.

WFMJ Chief Meteorologist Eric Willhelm theorizes a very strong atmospheric "inversion" may have played a part. Eric says the inversion has the effect of putting a "lid" on the lowest part of the atmosphere. Lights, smog and anything else under that lid can get "trapped".

The red light was likely from a large flame, as excess gas was being burned off during a process known as "flaring" at a Hilcorp Energy well in Poland.

A statement from Hilcorp says that while the flames are visible from a distance, there is no cause of alarm.

Hilcorp calls the process routine and regulated. The duration of flaring is variable depending on a number of factors.

The statement says  that Hilcorp continues to cooperate with ODNR's ongoing review of seismic activity near the well site.

Several small earthquakes were reported in the area over a two day period earlier this month.
