Ohio grants target anti-drug programs for kids

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Twenty-two grants totaling $1.5 million will help strengthen school-based alcohol and drug prevention programs in Ohio.

The governor's office said Monday that the Building Youth Resiliency grants will help at-risk kids in 19 counties. The program - part of Ohio's new youth drug prevention initiative called Start Talking! - targets students in 5th through 9th grades.

Building Youth Resiliency is a partnership between the Office of the First Lady Karen Kasich (KAY'-sihk), the Governor's Office of Faith-Based Initiatives and several state agencies. It is supported by federal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families dollars.

Programs were selected from a pool of 38 proposals. To be eligible, applicants were required to partner with schools where more than 40 percent of the student population qualifies for the free- and reduced- lunch program.
