YSU academy offers only peace officer rifle certification in Ohio

Posted: Updated:

HUBBARD, Ohio - Cadets at the YSU Peace Officer Training Academy are receiving lessons on the effective use of rifles for law enforcement.

A grant of eleven M-16 rifles valued at nearly $250,000 , makes the  school the only police academy in Ohio to provide training that certifies cadets in the safe and proper use rifles.

Ed Villone, commander of the academy, said being certified in the use of rifles is an increasingly important element for law enforcement officers.

Cadets of the YSU program will have that certification upon graduation. "This pushes us way ahead of other academies across the state." Villone said.

Training includes eight hours of class work, followed by qualifying at the Hubbard Gun Range on Elmwood Drive Extension.
