Neighbor tries to rescue Sharon man from burning home

Posted: Updated:

SHARON, Pa. - The Mercer County Coroner is investigating the death of a Sharon man found in his burning home Tuesday night

Sharon Fire Chief Terrance Whalen tells 21 News that his crews arrived at the home on 1188 Griswold Street just after 9:00 p.m.

Inside the bedroom, firefighters found the body of the homeowner, 84-year-old Robert Carson.

The chief says the fire started in the back of the home and spread to several rooms.

The state fire marshal is looking for the cause of the fire, but Chief Whalen does not suspect foul play.

Chief Whalen says that Carson had just come home from the hospital, and used a walker to get around.

Sharon police say that a neighbor, 49-year-old Rick Rueberger, tried to enter the burning home to rescue Carson, but was overcome by smoke and heat.

Rueberger was treated for smoke inhalation at Sharon Regional Health System.
